Graduate Program in Chemistry

Department Chair: Dr. Alex J. Roche
Director of the Graduate Program: Dr. Georgia Arbuckle-Keil

In September 1997, the Chemistry Department at Camden inaugurated its Graduate Program in Chemistry leading to the Master of Science degree. The department has assembled a very research-active group of faculty whose work is known internationally. The smaller size encourages better contact between faculty and students. The department does research in all major areas of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, theoretical, and biochemistry.

Members of the Graduate Program and Their Research Interests

Georgia A. Arbuckle-Keil, Professor (PhD, U Pennsylvania, 1987)
Electroactive polymer synthesis and characterization

Luke A. Burke, Professor (DSc, U Louvain, Belgium, 1978)
Organic reaction mechanisms, molecular modeling

Dr. Thomas Colacot, (Johnson Matthey) (PhD, Indian Institute of Technology, India, 1989)
Organometallic Catalysis, Homogeneous Catalysis

E. Roger Cowley, Professor, (PhD, Cambridge, 1966)
Theoretical Lattice Dynamics, Thermal Properties of Solids

Sidney A. Katz, Professor (PhD, U Pennsylvania, 1963)
Analytical chemistry, chromium speciation

Jing Li,  Professor II (Rutgers New Brunswick) (PhD, Cornell, 1990)
Inorganic and solid-state materials chemistry, molecular orbital and band theory

Paul Maslen, Associate Professor (PhD, Cambridge 1992)
Theoretical Chemistry

Peter Palenchar, Assistant Professor (PhD, U Delaware 2001)
Biochemistry

Alex J. Roche, Associate Professor and Chair (PhD, U Durham, 1995)
Organic and Organofluorine chemistry

GENERAL INFORMATION...

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, with over 48,000 students on three campuses in Camden, New Brunswick, and Newark, is one of the major state universiy systems in the nation. Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, Rutgers was the eigth institution of higher learning to be founded in colonial America. Today, Rutgers seeks to provide the highest quality undergraduate and graduate education. In addition to the Chemistry program, the Graduate School-Camden offers the master's degree in Biology, English, American and Public History, Liberal Studies, Physical Therapy, and Public Administration. The School of Business-Camden offers the Masters of Business Administration degree.

LOCATION

Rutgers University-Camden is an urban campus conveniently located in the transportation hub of southern New Jersey. Camden is the only one of the Rutgers campuses to lie next to a major city, being directly across the Delaware River from center city Philadelphia. The campus is within a two-minute walk from Philadelphia-New Jersey bus lines and the PATCO High Speed Line, which connects Philadelphia and Camden with the suburbs. Being at the base of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the campus lies at the intersection of several major highways. Dormitories as well as ample, well-lit, and secure parking facilities are available on campus.

PROGRAM

The program consists of three tracks, each leading to a sound mastery of the principles of chemistry. One track emphasizes participation in the research efforts of the faculty, terminating in a research thesis. The second track requires a thesis based on library research. The third track requires a term-paper and seminar on a topic of current research interest with the remaining credits being obtained via coursework. The program is capable of meeting the requirements of the full-time student, but all courses are given in the evening in order to accommodate students whose outside obligations limit their hours of attendance or the number of courses which can be completed each term. Graduates of each track will be ready for professions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, or can bring a profound understanding of Chemistry to the teaching of Science in secondary school. Each track also provides an excellent preparation for continuation in a Ph.D. program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Food Science, Materials Science, and related areas.

The program is designed to be completed in one and a half to two years by the full time student but may be pursued at a slower pace by the part-time student. A limited number of non-matriculated (nondegree) students will be permitted to register each term. A maximum of 4 courses taken as a nondegree student may be applied toward the M.S. degree.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

Admission is open to applicants with a baccalaureate degree in Chemistry or a related subject who show potential for successful graduate study. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of prior experience, achievement, and recommendations. The Graduate Examination general test is recommended as well as the Chemistry Subject test. It is the policy of Rutgers University to make benefits and services available to all students, on a nondiscriminitory basis. The Graduate Program in Chemistry encourages applications from minority groups.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Students must complete 30 credits (ten courses). Up to nine credits for graduate work at other institutions may be transferred. Students must also pass a comprehensive examination.
